Unfortunately, this ChinaFile debate is an object lesson in lazy bicoastal
journalism as it’s practiced in the United States today. Not one person
who currently works with a Confucius Institute has a voice in this
discussion. The issues raised by the participants are very important, but
much of their discussion betrays just how removed they are from the
educational issues that are supposed to be addressed by CIs. (And don’t
get me started on the near-total lack of diversity among the participants
in terms of gender or national origin.)

 
How about talking to people who actually teach and oversee Chinese
language courses at non-elite institutions, where most CIs are located? Or
maybe even their students?
