I specialize in U.S. urban literature and culture, but have become more
and more interested in the ways in which narrative patterns about city
life grounded in U.S. (and, more broadly, Western) literature are useful
(or not) in helping us make sense of the kind of urbanism emerging in
places like China. I was hoping that you might be able to pass along some
suggestions of literary texts that attempt to represent and make sense of
the cities that have been overhauled and/or produced by China's recent
urban revolution. I'm primarily interested in novels, but would also be
open to other genres and aesthetic mediums (film, photography, etc.). Are
there any really important and/or interesting texts that you think I might
want to read?
