Dear colleagues,

I wonder if contemporary lit specialists would comment on this review --
as a non-expert who may be asked to say something about Mo Yan at times
but without much interest in reading his work, I found this very
compelling. I looked up the author, who, I discovered, is not a China
specialist but a cultural critic with what appears to be an excellent
grounding in social theory.  Unless someone can point out how his portrait
of Mo Yan is flawed, I think this is likely to become my default
understanding of the man's work.  Such a well-written essay!
