The Department of Modern Literatures and Cultures at the University of
Richmond invites applications for the position of Director of the Chinese
Language Program, beginning August 2014. This position is a
non-tenure-track continuing position. The course load is 4-3.

Applicants must have at least a master’s degree in a relevant field (for
example, Chinese Studies or Applied Linguistics) and prior teaching
experience in Chinese language at all levels. Preference will be given to
qualified candidates with a Ph.D. The Department of Modern Literatures and
Cultures has a small but important major and minor program in Chinese
Studies, grounded in the study of the language and fulfilled by a broad
array of courses in Chinese literature and cultural studies. We are
particularly interested in candidates with expertise and training in
language pedagogy. Although the chief duties of this position are in
language teaching, the successful candidate must be willing to contribute
to the Asian Studies concentration in the International Studies program.
Experience in academic advising and coordinating a study abroad program is
desirable. The successful candidate must have native or near-native
fluency in Mandarin and English and a strong commitment to teaching at all
levels of the undergraduate liberal arts curriculum.

Applicants will be asked to submit electronically a cover letter, a
curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy, recent teaching
evaluations, and the names of three references who will receive an email
asking them to submit their letters of recommendation to the University.
At least one letter should address the candidate’s teaching effectiveness.
Review of applications will begin November 1st and continue until the
position is filled. We will be interviewing at the Modern Language
Association Annual Convention in Chicago in January 2014. Job application
