Special Summer Travel Grants (May-August 2013)
Application deadline: April 15, 2013

Scholars of Chinese Studies are encouraged to apply for travel grants
designed to promote the use of the Canton Archives and Passionist China
Collection at Ricci Institute for Chinese-Western Cultural History at
University of San Francisco Center for the Pacific Rim. The Ricci
Institute welcomes scholars and researchers working on social, cultural,
diplomatic, religious, economic, military, political, and architectural
history from the 19th and 20th centuries (to 1950). The Institute awards
travel grants to qualified individuals engaged in scholarly research and
writing. Preference will be given to applicants with a record of previous
publication, or those showing either a strong potential for publication,
lecturing, or use of the archival materials in a doctoral dissertation.
Travel grants are open to faculty, postdoctoral scholars, and doctoral
students.

The Catholic Archdiocese of Canton Archives

The collection contains approximately 15,000 items (30 linear feet) of
documents, plans, maps, correspondence, deeds, petitions, decree’s and
artifacts covering the period from 1851 to 1949. Written primarily in
French, Latin and Chinese during the late Qing and Republican Era, the
archives contain materials relating to the social, cultural, diplomatic,
economic, religious, and political life of the local society. The
collection also includes more than 800 property deeds/contractual
agreements and ten account books comprise by far the largest and most
complete collection of Chinese Christian property documents known to exist.

The Passionist China Collection

This collection consists of more than 50,000 folios of documents and 5,000
photos on the Passionist mission to Yuanling in West Hunan Province from
1920 to 1950. It offers first-hand information on the interaction between
American Catholic missionaries and Chinese locals in this particular
period of modern Chinese history. Documents are mainly in English, and
include correspondence, administrative records, and other materials on
individual Americans and their activities in Yuanling, Chongqing and
Yan’an. Black and white photos from 1921-1950’s offer a unique record of
activities carried out by the Passionists in the Yangzi River Valley, and
the social life and customs of the region.
