Subject: NYU booting Chen Guangcheng (2)
***********************************************************

With regard to Chen Guangcheng's move, I believe Professor Karl has it
exactly right.

Are the facts completely clear, though? The NY Post article implies *but
does not affirm* that the university gave CGC notice only recently. To
evaluate NYU's behavior one would need to know when they gave notice and
what commitments had been made when he moved in.

On the bright side, if like so many others Mr. Chen is having trouble with
his lease, this could be taken as a sign that he has successfully
integrated himself into the culture of New York City. And there's an easy
way NYU can dispel suspicions that it kowtowed to Beijing: at their new
Shanghai campus, let them name an auditorium after Chen Guangcheng. Of
course, in exchange for the right to use his name, he could demand another
year of residence. Is this not what the Chinese like to call a win-win
situation?
