Eric Abrahamsen's NYT post about the 100 authors who recently commemorated
Mao's talks at Yan'an in their own handwriting is insightful and sobering.

He notes that the thousand-yuan fee -- let us call it the dishonorarium --
was too little to suborn a successful author.  I wonder how many of the
100 are members of the Writers' Union?  If they have been drawing a State
salary or enjoying other perquisites, then the _quo_ in the background of
this _quid_ amounts to much more than a thousand yuan.

It is a pity that Mo Yan was not busy with house-guests when he was
approached about contributing to this book.
