Colleagues:

I am seeking information on the Shanghai middle school system in the
1940s.  i have an exam paper by a young woman in a middle school guowen 國文
class (Shanghai, ca.1947).  At the top of the paper it gives her name (in
Chinese) and under that in two lines (in English):  "S. M. II. B.//No.
48."  I am assuming that "No. 48" would be a student number?  Any ideas
about the other designation:  School?  Class?
