[Vwoolf] Dramatisations of VW

Looking back over the years (going on 40?), I didn't think Branagh, then himself a gangling unknown, was that bad as Charles Tansley-but I remember bristling at the sudden reinvention of the Ramsays as "Michael" and "Caroline," and resenting the conflation of Minta and Prue, etc.  And Suzanne Bertouch had too much presence for Lily, I'm afraid, though I realise that's a difficult line to tread given the need to keep an audience engaged with her.

Elisa and Trudi are both reminding me of the (dreadful) film version of To the Lighthouse. Adaptations/interpretations are sometimes exceptionally disrespectful to the original text, and the BBC TTL reading sounds very annoying.

Dear Elisa,

Thanks for the warning. A few months ago I heard part of an adaption of
To the Lighthouse on the BBC Sounds app. Usually the BBC readings are
outstanding, but the adaptations of VW can be variable. This version of
TTL had Mr Ramsay saying something like 'I am always right. It's what I
do', sounding bizarrely like Chandler from Friends. This adaptation
didn't seem to have much sense of Woolf's prose. I wonder if that's in
the same collection that you have?

Juliette Stevenson's readings of the full novels on Naxos, by contrast,
are I think extremely good.
