Dear Mark

It's a fascinating image and I'm glad that it is now in the safe hands of the University of Delaware!

On your queries.
Further sources:
Frances Spalding attributes the photograph to Vanessa in Frances's wonderful NPG exhibition catalogue although dates the photograph to 1893. This maybe because Frances cites as the source Smith College which houses Leslie Stephen's album and he dates the photo as 1893?

But, as you say Stella had a camera in 1892 and also Gerald Duckworth took many photographs with his camera in 1892 at Talland House although his style is more 'formal'. In a later letter to Thoby, Virginia asks Thoby to buy her camera film which suggests that all the children were familiar with cameras.
It is possible that the Stephen sisters were using the cameras. And later on the sisters did take photographs together (in Bournemouth for example)
Given that these cameras were held at waist level (not to the eye) I thought the image looked taken by a shorter person than Stella or Gerald.
The image is also in the Tate Archive collection of Vanessa's photographs (which are not all in her albums - there are additional loose photographs)
Stella Duckworth's diary for 1893 (in the BL) details her constant photography at Talland House but she does not mention taking the image in question in 1893.
So for these reasons (angle of image/Stella's 1893 diary/Tate collection) I thought it more likely that Vanessa took the photo.

Another photograph from Talland House which I included in Snapshots of Vanessa and Lisa Stillman cooking definitely looks taken by a shorter person - possibly Virginia?

But I would love to know more! And I could correct Snapshots if there was ever a second edition.

Many thanks for your query enabling me to look again at all my old, fading notes.

Very best wishes
Maggie

Perhaps specialists on the Virginia Woolf List may have some information, or response, to this query:

I am attempting to sort out a new acquisition of mine - a photograph of Virginia Woolf with her parents, 1890s;
here is an image from the Smith College Library website, quite similar to my photograph:
< https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.smith.edu/libraries/libs/rarebook/exhibitions/stephen/38h.htm__;!!KGKeukY!nrOsCUi-AI61yryHKpmUaYOau9Y5E49SET-4Btgi9RTRFyf70eqB02GEgFmZ7nzKeztcNC9h5_8l$ <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.smith.edu/libraries/libs/rarebook/exhibitions/stephen/38h.htm__;!!KGKeukY!ntMGUV7_8XDLR3Oe54gFtM8BJ1Ca8A35shvCjymbZbIJGCs6G6x5PVU4kUgBaZRBZPu0TjuCZ4Y9$> >

This item, now in my possession, comes from respected New York bookseller, Glenn Horowitz, and was part
of the Stella Duckworth-Jack Hills papers now at NYPL. Maggie Humm, in her Snapshots of Bloomsbury (2006),
reproduces the image from a print in the Monk's House album at Harvard, and says that the photograph was
taken by Vanessa Bell in 1892. Elizabeth P. Richardson, in A Bloomsbury Iconography (1989), does not attribute the
photograph to a particular person, but indicates a date of 1893, based on the ms. contents list in Leslie Stephen's
album (Smith College).

>From the Hyde Park Gate News, we learn that for her birthday on 30 May 1892, Stella Duckworth was
given a "camera machine" which she took to Talford House for the summer / early autumn holidays.
This suggests that Stella was the photographer, not Vanessa.

Would any specialists on the Virginia Woolf List have any insight into these uncertaities of date and photographer,
or thoughts on sources and perhaps others to query?

Normally, Woolf, indeed Bloomsbury in general, is not within the scope of the Mark Samuels Lasner Collection;
however, considering that all in the photograph were writers of the 1890s (though Virginia was not yet published), how
could this Victoriana collector resist?

Incidentally, U of Delaware has a nearly complete Hogarth Press collection, formed by the press's bibliographer, Howard Woolmer.

Kindly reply to either of my email accounts, below, and with special thanks to < Maureen E. Mulvihill<https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://www.carlkohler.se/pdf/Mulvihill-Woolf-PDF.pdf__;!!KGKeukY!ntMGUV7_8XDLR3Oe54gFtM8BJ1Ca8A35shvCjymbZbIJGCs6G6x5PVU4kUgBaZRBZPu0TpNmlY0T$>> for coordinating this query,
