And my apologies for misspelling "Marina." I also apologize for anything else that I said that might be considered offensive.

Best,

Virginia decided to be a writer when she was still a child; her sister Vanessa decided to be an artist. As she grew up, she first began reviewing, and then writing her novels, the first of which was The Voyage Out in 1915. The late 1910s were crucial years.

and...below...only accessible for those who have a subscription to the Financial Times (I do not), there's a reference to Woolf, Bloomsbury and the "living in squares" witticism.

I've provided the link to the letter and have pasted in the part of the page that is visible to the lowly beings who do not have subscriptions.

I think that Stuart Clarke's information about Margaret Irwin as the correct source of "living in squares," etc., has now made it into the mainstream discourse though Marian Vaizey's misleading information. While these authors are "[v]ariously credited," Irwin is the original source. And as I think about this letter, I wonder whether Irwin really was Woolf's "fellow writer." I always think of that phrase as more an allusion to the company one actually keeps as a writer.

Anyway, it's just a tidbit of random information on a Wednesday in July.

Letter: Another gloss on Parker’s Bloomsbury ‘bon mot’

JULY 1 2021

Further to John Ure’s letter attributing the quip about the Bloomsbury Group’s “geometry” to Dorothy Parker (June 30), some say the full quote is the Bloomsberries not only lived in squares and loved in triangles, but “laboured in circles”, that is political circles.

The original observation is variously credited to either Virginia Woolf, her fellow writer Margaret Irwin or the journalist Kingsley Martin.

Many say the quote doesn’t sound like Parker but point out that Parker’s reputation was such that any legendary bon mot would be seen as her handiwork.

She was an acerbic wit and writer, and in the 1920s a member of New York’s Algonquin Round Table writers’ group which enjoyed drop-in visits from the British playwright Noël Coward, the actress Tallulah Bankhead and even Harpo Marx.
