[Vwoolf] Woolf's Art of Biography

Hi Ellen, ‘The Art of Biography’ was first published in the Atlantic Monthly April 1939 (v163, No. 4, pp. 506-10). According to the notes in vol 6 of the Essays VW referred to the article (not necessarily by name) in her diary 19-20 Feb 1937, 14 Nov 1938, 25 Nov 1938. It was not a review of any particular book.

I apologize if this has already been posted; it has not come through to my box.  I asked if anyone can tell me where Woolf's "Art of Biography" was originally published, what year, and what book was this essay a review for (if there is a single book). My guess is Strachey's Elizabeth and Essex.

 

I own it only in the 1970 reprint of the 1942 The Death of the Moth and Other Essays, and cannot find it in the first four volumes of the Essays of Virginia Woolf.
