John Mortimer anecdote: “a judge admonished two gentlemen, caught in a compromising position under Waterloo Bridge: ‘What makes it worse is that you chose to do it under one of the most *beautiful* bridges in London!’”

Unfortunately, it’s not possible to be sure which Waterloo bridge the judge was referring to. The old bridge by John Rennie was demolished in 1936 and the new one by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott was built 1937–42. However, a jointly signed letter to “The Times” on 9 March 1932 referred to “the beauty of Waterloo Bridge”, and another letter, signed by the Woolfs and others, appeared on 8 April, expressed their “wholehearted agreement” with the previous letter.
