It was a disappointment to me that Miss Avery part was cut back for the film. As I recall, I was looking forward to “Yes, murder’s enough.” – and it never came.

Didn't recognise the name, but I know the face: can't believe she didn't play the Red Queen in one of the many adaptations of Alice in Wonderland [sic]. But I see from Wikipedia that she was Miss Avery in Howards End.

As the late great Barbara Hicks says at the end of the 1956 film “Sailor Beware!”: “That hat’s all wrong for a start!”

Rarely given more than a line or two – indeed in “Orlando”, she’s given no lines at all (in the scene on the ice) – I was delighted to see her on the stage of the National with Judi Dench in “Absolute Hell”, when she got several lines and a tiny scene to herself.

Someone on the VWSGB Facebook page has asked about the artist of a painting on a Mrs Dalloway cover: Flamingo Modern Classics (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mrs-Dalloway-Flamingo-Modern-Classics/dp/0006547559 or https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mrs-Dalloway-Flamingo-Modern-Classics/dp/0586044469).

Does anyone have one of these editions? I imagine the artist is credited on the back cover.

Sarah
