According to Whitaker's Almanack the 1923 solstice occurred on June 22 at 12:03 and the sunrise, "ashen pale," followed at 3:45 AM. The clock was striking one, two, three.
A solstice myth mentioned by Francis Cornford in Harrison's Themis gives structure and significance to the Dalloway marriage. The Pindaric ode #1 tells of Pelops who eloped with Hippodamia, just as Sally proposed that Peter elope with Clarissa.
Richard Dalloway's misnomer "Wickham" recalls the eloping couple in Pride and Prejudice. Clarissa ponders her life as it might have been had she run away and lived with Peter who says its was "silly to have married like that." Sally asks how she could have done it, questioning the success of the Dalloway marriage. Apparently they eloped.
