1) NSF has finally released the long-awaiting revision to the Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST) program. From the program synopsis (http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5467):

ITEST supports the development, implementation, and selective spread of innovative strategies for engaging students in experiences that: (1) increase student awareness of STEM and information and communications technology (ICT) careers; (2) motivate students to pursue the education necessary to participate in those careers; and/or (3) provide students with technology-rich experiences that develop their knowledge of related content and skills (including critical thinking skills) needed for entering the STEM workforce. ITEST projects must involve students, and may also include teachers. Projects that actively engage business and industry partners to better ensure that PreK-12 experiences foster the knowledge and skill-sets needed for emerging STEM-related occupations are strongly encouraged. ITEST supports two project types:

     * Strategies projects support the design, implementation, and testing of innovative educational experiences that support the objectives of the ITEST program.
     * SPrEaD (Successful Project Expansion and Dissemination) projects support the wider and broader testing and dissemination of promising strategies to generate evidence and greater understanding of contextual factors that operate to enhance, moderate, or constrain anticipated project impacts.

Strategies awards may be $1,200,000 over 3 years, and SPrEaD awards may be up to $2,000,000 over 3–5 years. Proposals are due November 13.

2) There’s a new NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) solicitation (http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=6201) and due dates for 2015:

  *   October 26, 2015: Geosciences; Life Sciences
  * October 27, 2015: Computer and Information Science and Engineering; Engineering; Materials Research
  * October 29, 2015: Psychology; Social Sciences; STEM Education and Learning
  * October 30, 2015: Chemistry; Mathematical Sciences; Physics and Astronomy

3) Department of Energy (DOE) Traineeship in Robotics (http://www.grants.gov/web/grants/search-grants.html?keywords=DE-FOA-0001374):

This FOA will establish DOE-sponsored University-led traineeships as a mechanism for graduate-level training critical to DOE mission-driven workforce needs. This will be accomplished through a focused academic graduate program that delivers unique, innovative curriculum, coupled with a rigorous thesis or dissertation research requirement, in the desired DOE-relevant scientific or technical discipline(s). The DOE-sponsored University-led traineeships will strategically address identified STEM workforce training needs in the area of Robotics as they apply to: nuclear environmental remediation; radioactive waste retrieval, treatment, processing, storage, transportation, and disposal; stewardship of spent nuclear fuel and special nuclear materials; nuclear facility and infrastructure operations, maintenance and sustainment; facility/infrastructure deactivation and decommissioning; occupational (worker) safety; industrial and nuclear facility safety; and other activities related to the handling and management of high-hazard, high-consequence materials and waste.

"...anticipates making awards in the $1 million per year range, with a five-year award not to exceed $5.0 million." Letter of intent is due August 21, and full proposals are due September 30.
