1) The NSF Advancing Informal STEM Learning (AISL) program has a new solicitation (http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=504793). From the program synopsis:

The Advancing Informal STEM Learning (AISL) program seeks to advance new approaches to and evidence-based understanding of the design and development of STEM learning opportunities for the public in informal environments; provide multiple pathways for broadening access to and engagement in STEM learning experiences; and advance innovative research on and assessment of STEM learning in informal environments.

Proposal budgets vary by type of project:
(1) Collaborative Planning projects: up to $150,000 with duration of one year;
(2) Exploratory Pathways projects: up to $300,000 with duration up to two years;
(3) Research in Service to Practice projects: from $300,000 to $2,000,000 with a duration from two to five years;
(4) Innovations in Development projects: $500,000 to $3,000,000 with duration from two to five years;
(5) Broad Implementation projects: from $500,000 to $3,000,000 with a duration from two to five years;
(6) Conference projects: up to $250,000 with a duration of up to two years;
(7) up to one Informal STEM Learning Resource Center award up to $5 million with a duration of five years. If the Resource Center is funded in 2016, there will not be a competition for a Resource Center in 2017.

Proposals are due November 4.

2) The NSF Directorate of Engineering’s “Professional Formation of Engineers” (PFE) initiative seeks "to create and support an innovative and inclusive engineering profession for the 21st Century.” It currently has three funding opportunities:

  * The Professional Formation of Engineers: Research Initiation in Engineering Formation (PFE: RIEF) program (http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=503603) "enables engineering faculty who are renowned for teaching, mentoring, or leading educational reform efforts on their campus to initiate collaborations with colleagues in the social and/or learning sciences to address difficult, boundary-spanning problems in the professional formation of engineers.” Proposals are due March 31, 2016.
  * The Research in the Formation of Engineers (RFE) program (http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=503584) "welcomes proposals that consider the construction of engineering knowledge, engineering identity, and the engineering profession, as well as interventions that expand the boundaries of each of these.” Proposals are due October 29, 2015 and February 17, 2016.
  * The IUSE/Professional Formation of Engineers: Revolutionizing Engineering Departments (RED) program (http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=505105) "enables engineering departments to lead the nation by successfully achieving significant sustainable changes necessary to overcome long-standing issues in their undergraduate programs and educate inclusive communities of engineering students prepared to solve 21st century challenges. (Note: “Engineering departments” in this solicitation will refer to engineering and computer science departments.).” An NSF program officer said that an announcement of a new competition will be “soon.”

3) The USDA NIFA Higher Education Multicultural Scholars Program (MSP) (http://nifa.usda.gov/funding-opportunity/higher-education-multicultural-scholars-program-msp) funds scholarship programs "to increase the multicultural diversity of the food and agricultural scientific and professional workforce, and advance the educational achievement of all Americans by providing competitive grants to colleges and universities."

The purpose of the MSP is to provide scholarships to support recruiting, engaging, retaining, mentoring, and training committed, eligible multicultural scholars, resulting in either baccalaureate degrees within the food and agricultural sciences disciplines or the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) degree. The scholarships are intended to encourage outstanding students from groups that are historically underrepresented and underserved to pursue and complete baccalaureate degrees in the Food, Agricultural, Natural Resources, and Human Sciences, or achieve a D.V.M., that would lead to a diverse and highly skilled work force. Through these scholarships, the goal of the MSP is to increase the participation of any group historically underrepresented in USDA mission areas and prepare them for the professional and scientific workforce in these areas.

Awards may be for up to $200,000 over 4 years. Proposals are due August 31.
