1) The *NSF Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER)* program (
http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=503214) provides five years
of support for untenured faculty in fields funded by NSF. STEM Initiatives
offers several workshops and other events to help Ohio State faculty
prepare proposals. Upcoming events:

*April 22:* A workshop<https://steminitiatives.osu.edu/events/nsf-faculty-early-career-development-career-award-outreacheducationdiversity-workshop>focusing
on the outreach/education/diversity portion of NSF CAREER proposals
*May 21:* Faculty can learn more about collaborating with Metro Early
College High School during "Get To Know
Metro<https://steminitiatives.osu.edu/events/osu-stem-researchers-can-get-know-metro>
"

In addition, these videorecordings are available:

   - "How to Write a Winning NSF CAREER Proposal
Webinar<https://carmenwiki.osu.edu/display/10040/2014+NSF+CAREER+Award+Applicants>"
   (available until April 30, 2014)
   - A panel discussion<http://streaming.osu.edu/player/?f=Arts_Sciences/NSF_CAREER_panel_2014.mp4>with
recent Ohio State faculty members who have received NSF CAREER awards
   and former NSF program directors.

2) The US Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences has
published notice for the FY 15 *IES Education Research Grant* program (
https://www.federalregister.gov/articles/2014/04/10/2014-08107/applications-for-new-awards-education-research-and-special-education-research-grant-programs).
Applications are accepted in ten education research topics:

   - Cognition and Student Learning.
   - Early Learning Programs and Policies.
   - Education Technology.
   - Effective Teachers and Effective Teaching.
   - English Learners.
   - Improving Education Systems: Policies, Organization, Management, and
   Leadership.
   - Mathematics and Science Education.
   - Postsecondary and Adult Education.
   - Reading and Writing.
   - Social and Behavioral Context for Academic Learning.

Letters of intent are due June 5 and full proposals are due August 7.
Budgets can be between $100,000-$1,000,000 over up to 5 years.

3) The revised *NSF Advancing Informal STEM Learning (AISL)* solicitation
has been released (http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=504793).
The program synopsis:

The Advancing Informal STEM Learning (AISL) program seeks to advance new
approaches to and evidence-based understanding of the design and
development of STEM learning in informal environments; provide multiple
pathways for broadening access to and engagement in STEM learning
experiences; advance innovative research on and assessment of STEM learning
in informal environments; and develop understandings of deeper learning by
participants.

The AISL program supports six types of projects: (1) Pathways, (2) Research
in Service to Practice, (3) Innovations in Development, (4) Broad
Implementation, (5) Conferences, Symposia, and Workshops, and (6) Science
Learning+ Proposals.

Proposals to Science Learning+ are due July 10; other proposal types are
due November 14. Budget amounts vary by type of proposal:
(1) Pathways projects: up to $300,000 with duration up to two years;
(2) Research in Service to Practice projects: from $300,000 to $2,000,000
with a duration from two to five years;
(3) Innovations in Development projects: $500,000 to $3,000,000 with
duration up to five years;
(4) Broad Implementation projects from $500,000 to $3,000,000 with a
duration from two to five years;
(5) Conferences, Symposia, and Workshops projects up to $250,000 with a
duration of up to two years;
(6) Science Learning+ Planning projects up to $115,000 for a duration of
one year in 2015, and Partnership projects up to $2.4 million with a
duration of up to five years in 2016.

4) The new *National Science Foundation Research Traineeship Program
(NRT)*focuses on graduate student training (
http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=505015). From the program
synopsis:

The NSF Research Traineeship (NRT) program is designed to encourage the
development of bold, new, potentially transformative, and scalable models
for STEM graduate training that ensure that graduate students develop the
skills, knowledge, and competencies needed to pursue a range of STEM
careers. The NRT program initially has one priority research theme -
Data-Enabled Science and Engineering (DESE); in addition, proposals are
encouraged on any other crosscutting, interdisciplinary theme...NRT
projects should develop evidence-based, sustainable approaches and
practices that substantially improve STEM graduate education for NRT
trainees and for STEM graduate students broadly at an institution. NRT
emphasizes the development of competencies for both research and
research-related careers...Creation of sustainable programmatic capacity at
institutions is an expected outcome. Proposals accordingly are expected to
describe how institutions will support the continuation and
institutional-level scaling of effective training elements after award
closure.

Institutions are limited to 2 proposals, and the deadline for Ohio State's
internal competition is April 28. Letters of intent are due to NSF May 20
and full proposals are due June 24. Budgets can be up to $3,000,000 over
five years.
