*1) NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Sites focusing on STEM
education research:* NSF has released a "Dear Colleague" letter (
http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2011/nsf11076/nsf11076.jsp?WT.mc_id=USNSF_29&WT.mc_ev=click)
that points out that the existing REU RFP (
http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5517) supports REU Site
proposals that focus on research in STEM education, From the letter:
Accordingly, the Directorate for Education and Human Resources is interested
in encouraging the submission of proposals for new REU Sites that would
engage undergraduate students in conducting STEM education research.
Proposals are welcome from investigators at institutions of higher education
in STEM disciplinary departments or schools/colleges of education, as well
as from investigators in other organizations concerned with STEM education
research, such as science centers and national facilities.

It is unfortunate that NSF waited until today to release this letter--the
deadline for proposals to this competition is only 20 days away (August 24).

*2) NRC Workshop on Climate Change Education*
August 31-September 1
Washington DC

The workshop will focus on climate change education in formal settings from
Kindergarten through the first two years of college (K-14). It will begin
with an investigation on student understanding of climate change and global
warming and the state and quality of curriculum and curricular
materials/textbooks in K-12. The discussions that follow will focus on the
role that upcoming national and state standards may play in shaping future
climate change education; then explore teacher understanding and preparation
including how teachers currently teach climate change and challenges
teachers face when teaching climate change and climate science. The final
session will explore a variety of innovative approaches to teaching climate
change in high school and the first two years of college. The workshop will
provide ample opportunity for discussion and dialogue during plenary and
break-out sessions.

The workshop agenda and information on connecting remotely will be available
soon.
