[Somean] Friday: Martha Austen and discussion

Hi all,

This week at So Mean (Friday 11:10-12:30, Oxley 122) we have two things happening. Martha Austen will workshop some experimental stimuli with us. These are southern English talkers exhibiting the BATH/TRAP split or ungrammatical variations on it, to test other speakers' linguistic and sociolinguistic perceptions of the variation.

In the second half of the session, we'll discuss ethics, community engagement, "giving back", and linguistic gratuity. I'm attaching a few possible readings here. Note that if you're in my 5602 course, the Rickford & King and the Hudley (2012) will be assigned readings for our ethics discussion in that class later in the semester. Feel free to look over any of these, or simply come in with your own thoughts.
