Hey all,

LING 5602, Introduction to Quantitative Sociolinguistics is in danger of not making, so I'd appreciate it if you could let likely students know about it. It's common for PhD students with any interest in sociolinguistics or related fields, and for advanced undergraduates looking for a challenge.

Thanks,

Kathryn

Introduction to Quantitative Sociolinguistics
Hitchcock Hall 030
Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:30-10:55 pm

661.02 is a graduate level introduction to the central concerns of quantitative sociolinguistics and the frameworks and methods of analysis that sociolinguists working in this area have developed. The course will focus on some of the major findings this type of sociolinguistic research has yielded about the nature of linguistic variation and its relation to language structure. The class will be very hands-on, including training in methods of statistical analysis. We will work with a series of example data sets to try out different methods of transcription, coding, statistical assessment and analysis as the course progresses.
