Experimental Details

Review the window notes and any associated equipment guides for additional details. Please refer to last week’s email<https://lists.osu.edu/pipermail/preplabstudents/2026-February/000332.html> for details on DAG and FPD.

PPG
All rooms have a significant stash of 1.7 mL microcentrifuge tubes behind their marker boards. The students will be using the centrifuges for this- if they report one is not working, check the following: it’s plugged in, turned on, and the lid is fully closed. If it still doesn’t work, trade it with one of the extras in the window. Place a broken item sticker on the faulty unit and place it on the broken items shelf.
When doing cart checks for this experiment, swap the entire bin of reagents regardless of fill level. Do not check individual bottles- it takes too long.

MSR

We have a bin for broken burets, in some cases we can salvage them. (List price is ~$200 per buret) Please keep any pipet pumps that have broken off pipets in them or are leaking in the designated bin- we may be able to salvage them. Details on where to place these broken items are available in the window notes.

As a reminder: TAs, Lab Supervisors, Prep Lab Students, nor Prep Lab Staff are permitted to clean up blood. This needs to be done by FOD or EHS- this will be coordinated through one of the Prep Lab Staff.

PbI

Solids will be passed out from the lab support window. Do not give out partial sets at the start of lab. We’ll be using the vacuum ports for this experiment; the TAs do not need to do anything with the vacuum pump. Be sure the vacuum control knob in the second-floor window (by the fire extinguisher) is in the “auto” position We will also be using the ovens; they open by pulling the bottom of the handle up towards the ceiling- no rotating required. We strongly encourage TAs and students to keep the oven doors closed as much as possible. This helps with heat loss.

BAR

The spectrometers use the same power cord as the hot plates. There is a “broken UV-Vis” cart in the window. Please place any broken UV-Vis on this cart immediately as they are reported. As always with anything broken, please put a broken item sticker on it describing the issue. When doing the cart check for this experiment, please swap all allura red bottles. We can check and refill them down in the lab.

LLT

Blue square carboys of 0.44 M NaOH will be swapped out during the lab readiness checks by those completing them. When swapping out the blue carboys, check the fill level of the spill tray. Let us know if it’s more than half full. Partially filled bottles of lemon and lime juice should be placed in the fridge. We will periodically combine these. When doing a gather, please check the fridge first for full bottles of lemon and lime juice. If you need more than what is available in the fridge, please grab new bottles from aisle 28. No partial bottles of lemon or lime juice should be left in aisle 28.

SST

If a lab indicates they don’t have enough meters and probes, be sure they are planning to work in pairs. pH meters, probes, and cables to connect the two, are on the bench closest to Hood A.

There could be a few rooms with old (black cable) probes, most rooms will have new (white wire) probes. The probes with the black cables will need to be attached to the top of the meters whereas the new white wire probes will need to be attached to the probe and meter via the white wire.

Connections are made on the top of the meter by pushing and turning (BNC type). Both pH probe types will have either a black o-ring or blue rubber piece at the top of the probe shaft to cushion it from the glass storage tube and help seal in the storage solution. These should stay at the top of the probes while the students are taking readings.

If a student claims their pH meter is “broken”, they should have their TA try to calibrate it before bringing it to the window for an exchange. Emma has prepared a guide on how to handle pH meter issues, everyone is required to review it. It will be available in the window and the prep lab office.
Other Information

Clean Your Dirty BuckIDs

We’ve left some alcohol wipes on the top of Keyth. If the magnetic stripe on your BuckID has junk on it, please use the wipe to clean it off.

Locking & Unlocking

When assigned to lock or unlock labs, you should be on the assigned floor by the start time of that task. Our promise is to have the labs open 15 minutes before the session starts.

Window Tasks

Tyler looks through all of the completed forms. There have been some window tasks recently that have not been initialed. Please be sure you are completing these tasks and initialing the mini daily sheet when they are done.

Calling 911

When someone feels dizzy, lightheaded, or like they are going to pass out, calling 911 to have EMS look at the person is not optional. I got an incident report this week that indicated a student was feeling like the could faint. The incident report indicated that 911 was not called.
