Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes and gather sheets for additional details.

Please see the Week 7 email<https://lists.osu.edu/pipermail/preplabstudents/2025-February/000251.html> for notes on STO and LCP.

PPG
We’re expecting to go through LOTS of microcentrifuge tubes this week. All rooms all have a stash of microcentrifuge tubes behind their marker boards. The students will be using the centrifuges for this- if they report one is not working check the following: it’s plugged in, turned on, and the lid is fully closed. If it still doesn’t work, trade it with one of the extras in the window. Place a broken item sticker on the faulty unit. When doing cart checks for this experiment, swap the entire bucket of reagents regardless of fill level. Do not check individual bottles- it’ll take too long.

CYC
This is a quick one! pH paper and pH reference cards will be on the reagent cart. If more pH paper is needed it can be obtained from the window. TAs will pick up samples of CuO at the start of lab. These will be kept in the labeled bin on the unknown shelf. Unknown bins should not be removed from the unknown shelf. Only hand out full sets of unknowns to TAs. Any leftovers should be properly disposed of by the TA at the end of the lab session.

IHT
Materials will be available on the reagent cart or on the bench beside hood A. Cups and lids will be in the red dispensers by the balances. We’re going to use quite a few weigh boats, cup and lids- so be sure to keep a close eye on these.

SAL
TAs will pick up sets of salts at the start of lab. These will be kept in the labeled bin on the unknown shelf. Unknown bins should not be removed from the unknown shelf. Colorless empty microcentrifuge tubes will be available in the red bins by the balances. Additional colorless empty microcentrifuge tubes are stored behind the marker boards. Only empty centrifuge tubes should be placed in the blue bucket. Blue buckets should be swapped out during waste runs if they are more than half full. If you see any leftover tubes of solids on the reagent carts when doing your checks, please give them to the windows- window people, please put them in the “partial unknown sets” bin.

1250 Review
Chem 1250 will be holding another review session this week. The lecture instructor will be giving us handouts to place on the cart during the REVIEW cart change. Please leave any papers you find on the cart there until the HCAL cart change. If TAs come to the window looking for the handouts, please remind them they are on the 1250 reagent cart.

BAR
The spectrometers are behind the white boards in each room on both floors. They use the same power cord as the hot plates. Cuvettes and volumetric flasks will be on the bench next to Hood A. These items should be returned after use. Be prepared to replace volumetric flasks, they occasionally get broken. As a reminder, if any pipet pumps with glass stuck in them (or “leaky” pipet pumps) are returned to the window, please put them in the appropriate labeled bin.

Other Important Information

Removing Reagents
Take a gather sheet with you so you know what to remove. We’ve been leaving behind things in the hoods and on the benches.

Tyler Checks Things…
I look at the mini daily sheets the next day, I also review the forms in the basket on top of the daily sheet cabinet when I empty it.

Broken Bottles
If you come across a bottle with a broken cap, missing label, etc. Let us know so we can help take care of it. You can always access the caps, scoops, etc. on the end of aisle 26/27. Broken caps can be thrown in the “plastics” lab debris barrel.

Broken Equipment
We’ll have a broken UV-Vis cart. If someone reports a broken UV-Vis, please take the cart to the room, place the broken unit on the cart, and return the cart to the window. If someone reports a broken balance, a broken equipment sticker should be placed on the balance and a message should be sent in the GroupMe.

Please let us know if you have any questions!

Best,
Tyler
