Hi there!

Spring break is only three weeks away! That means week 7 is coming up next. The lab schedule is below.

Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes and gather sheets for additional details.

Please see the Week 6 email<https://lists.osu.edu/pipermail/preplabstudents/2025-February/000249.html> for notes on STR and CLK.

STO
TA demo kits are in Hood A. These include a jar of sand for smothering a Mg fire if it gets out of control. To be clear, the jar of sand should only be used in an emergency. If the TA cannot find the magnesium strips, they should check the cart, the hood, and the box containing the other items needed for the demonstration.

PbI
Solid reagents will be handed out from the lab support windows. These are provided in class sets and should be picked up by the TA before lab starts. Do not give out partial sets at the start of lab. We’ll be using the vacuum ports for this experiment; the TAs do not need to do anything with the vacuum pump. We will also be using the ovens; they open by pulling the bottom of the handle up towards the ceiling- no rotating required. We strongly encourage TAs and students to keep the oven doors closed as much as possible. This helps prevent significant heat loss. When doing lab readiness checks, please verify that a box of P5 filter paper is present on the reagent cart. If not, grab one from the window.

LLT
Be prepared to direct students to the window cart for burets, pipets, pipet pumps, and blue stoppers. Please refill the window cart when things start to get low- this goes for all items on the window cart, not just the items being used for LLT. The 0.44 M NaOH carboy should be kept on the special carboy spill tray. Blue square carboys of 0.44 M NaOH should be swapped out during the lab readiness checks by those completing them. When swapping out the blue carboys, check the fill level of the spill tray. Let us know if it’s more than half full. Partially filled bottles of lemon and lime juice should be placed in the fridge. We will periodically combine these. When doing a gather, please check the fridge first for full bottles of lemon and lime juice. If you need more than what is available in the fridge, please grab new bottles from aisle 28. No partial bottles of lemon or lime juice should be left in aisle 28.

LCP
Students will be using ice toward the end of lab. We do not provide scoops for ice, instead students should use an empty beaker from their drawer. Students will not be provided with salt for their ice baths. Keep a close eye on the 25-mL test tubes. If they need refilled, more are available behind the marker boards.

MGB
Model kits will be provided on the bench beside Hood A. Sarah and Emma have replacement parts in both windows if needed.

VOL
This one has A LOT of equipment and solutions. Students will be using multimeters. If they report that one is not working properly, please just swap the whole kit for one of the replacements in the window. Fill out a broken equipment sticker with as much detail as possible, and place it on the returned unit. One of the prep lab staff members will look at the “broken” kit. The students will be sanding the oxidation layer off the electrodes with emery paper/cloth. This should be done on the provided cardstock; the card stock should be placed on the provided black plastic tray. The whole sanding procedure should be done under a snorkel. Each room has been provided with 7 trays since they only have 7 snorkels. Students should not be sanding directly on the lab bench.

Other Important Information

Mid-Semester Survey
You will soon receive an email inviting you to complete a mid-semester survey. For those of you that were with us in the fall, this will feel very similar. We want to gauge what is going well and what has room for improvement. We also want to gain some insight into whether the changes we made between fall and spring semester are helping. This survey is anonymous, so please be honest.

Loaner iPads
We’ll place one loaner iPad in each window. A student may check these out for situations where their iPad may have died or the room is short on devices needed for a particular experiment (think MGB, MML, or EMS).

Waste Containers
Please be sure all waste containers are closed when they are not being filled. Specifically, we’ve been seeing the glass and lab debris barrels left open. Lids should be returned to the barrels after adding waste.

Best,
Tyler
