Greetings!
Week 6 is upon us! Here’s what we’ve got planned:

Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes and gather sheets for additional details.
Please see the Week 5 email <https://lists.osu.edu/pipermail/preplabstudents/2025-February/000248.html> for info on MML and BAR.
STR
This is one of my favorites! Nothing should be needed from the lab support window. Students should try to keep their samples under the snorkels as much as possible. This will help immensely with the odor in the room. The waste will be disposed of in the white can (Chemical Waste container) in Hood B. Concentrated sulfuric acid dropper bottles should stay in Hood A. If the TA cannot find it, please have them double check Hood A and the cart.
CPC
The distillation apparatus needs to be unplugged when not in use. Ideally, the water pump and heating mantle should be plugged in and turned on about 10-15 minutes before the lab session starts. The apparatus needs to be checked at least every 30 minutes by someone from the lab support window. Set a timer for 30 minutes to remind yourselves. This video<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8J57oDHy_I> shows how to add ice and transfer water from the receiving flask to the heating flask (still pot) properly. You must watch this video prior to the start of CPC. Remember that end of both pieces of tubing (from the condenser and to the condenser) should be inside the bucket.
If you need to stop heating the flask for any reason, turn the heating mantle off and lower it away from the flask. This is why we set them up so high- it makes it easy to kill the heat quickly.
CYC
This is a quick one! pH paper and pH reference cards will be on the reagent cart. If more pH paper is needed it can be obtained from the window. TAs will pick up samples of CuO at the start of lab. These will be kept in the labeled bin on the unknown shelf. Unknown bins should not be removed from the unknown shelf. Only hand out full sets of unknowns to TAs. Any leftovers should be properly disposed of by the TA at the end of the lab session. If for some reason during the lab session another sample is needed, check the partial unknown sets bin first. If you cannot find what you need in the partials bin, break a set, and put the remainder in the partials bin.
CLK
This one tends to either be quick or take the whole lab session. Flip thermometers, timers, and rulers are all in the student drawers. Extra thermometers and replacement batteries will be in the window. This one usually uses a bunch of spill kits. Keep a close eye on your spill kits and request replacements as needed.
GAS
Each TA will pick up a large bag containing Alka-Seltzer, antacids, and small empty bags. It’s ok for students to ask for an additional package of Alka-Seltzer at the window for Part C. Extra tubing for the gas collection apparatus will be available in the window. The barometers in each room are near the thermostat (on the same wall as hood B). There are extra ring stands in each room between the ADA sink and Hood A.
WST
This experiment will be done in pairs this semester and moving forward. pH meters and probes are still on the bench closest to Hood A.
There will be some rooms with a mix of old (black cable) and new (white cable) probes, and some rooms with only new (white cable) probes. The probes with the black cables will need to be attached to the top of the meters. The new probes will require the cable to be connected at the probe and at the meter.
Connections are made on the top of the meter by pushing and turning. Both pH probe types will have either a black o-ring or blue rubber piece at the top of the probe shaft to cushion it from the glass storage tube and help seal in the storage solution. These should stay at the top of the probes while the students are taking readings. Students should only remove the probe from the rack, the test tube should be left in the rack.
If a student indicates their pH meter is “broken”, they should have their TA try to calibrate it before bringing it to the window for an exchange. Emma has prepared a guide on how to handle pH meter issues. It will be available in the window for reference.
Other Important Information
Security
When closing a floor, be sure that all labs are locked up. If there are two people assigned to the window, one person should lock the lab doors, the other person should later check that they are all truly locked.
If a lab is not being used, it needs to be locked, regardless of time. If you are completing a task that necessitates unlocking a room, please be sure the room is locked when you leave it.
We cannot leave the prep lab unlocked and unattended. If you are the last person in the office/lab and need to go somewhere please have someone come down to babysit the lab, or grab key #1 in Keyth, and lock up while you are gone. If Sarah and/or Emma dismiss the student employees, and nobody will be in the office/lab after all students leave, be sure to lock the door into the office and the door into the lab before heading out.
Max Hours per Day
Effective immediately: student employees of the prep lab are not permitted to work more than 8 hours per day, including picked up shifts. This policy is being implemented for safety reasons.
New Window Task- Paper Towel Check
We’ll be adding a new task to the window, Paper Towel Check. For this, the assigned person should check that each sink and snorkel on their floor has a roll of paper towels. If more paper towels are needed, please use the stash under the sinks in the room.
Keys
Please put keys back after you use them. We’ve had several instances recently where keys were needed but were not in Keyth. It’s common that they are left in a lab coat pockets. Please check your pockets when you take your lab coat off.

Tyler
