Hi friends!

Week 2 starts Monday! This will be our first full week of lab for the semester! As a reminder, it’s a great idea to start your shift by checking the daily sheet to see what has been scheduled. You’ll need to go over to that area anyway to put your belongings in the red cubies.

Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes and gather sheets for additional details.

DPR

Boxes of goggles and lab manuals will be available in each lab room. TAs should not need to pick up anything from the lab support window. Be prepared to give out burets, and direct students to the window cart for pipets and pipet pumps. Please see the note below about goggles.

WRM

Boxes of goggles and lab manuals will be available in each lab room. TAs should not need to pick up anything from the lab support window. We keep a box of extra WRM pipets in the window. Please dip into this if a room runs out prior to the next cart check. The box is white and should say “WRM pipets” on it. Be prepared to give out burets, and direct students to the window cart for pipets and pipet pumps. Please see the note below about goggles.

INK

Boxes of lab manuals will be available in each lab room. TAs will be picking up INK unknowns from the lab support window. Remember that unknowns will be kept in the plastic boxes on the unknown shelf. Do not give unknowns out to students. We have put some extras of each pen, pencils, and blank chromatography paper in the second floor window just in case they are needed. Be prepared to give out burets & 50-mL volumetric flasks, and direct students to the window cart for pipets and pipet pumps. Please see the note below about goggles.

Other Important Information-

Student Goggles

If students need goggles that fit over their glasses, they can swap their “normal” goggles at the window for a pair of OTG goggles. If the OTG goggles still don’t work, have an ALS (Assistant Lab Supervisor) talk with the student. We have a small number of other options we can try. These are in a small white bucket in each window.

If a student is not enrolled in Chem 1110, 1210, 1610, or 1910H and has never taken a chemistry course on OSU’s Columbus campus, they may stop by the window and get a pair of goggles for free. If they have taken chemistry on the Columbus campus before, they need to purchase a pair from Chem Stores, 180 Celeste.

Everyone should be keeping an eye out for goggle box litter. Please help keep our trash under control by picking up anything you see. Extra trash bags are available in both windows. Please tie off blue recycling barrel bags and replace them as necessary.

Paper Training Logs

Once you have completed all training items, you should submit your completed paper training log (the blue paper) to any of the prep lab staff. We will store these in the yellow CHP binder and will make it as completed on the Prep Lab Forum.

ALS and Head TA Personal Information

Please do not give out phone numbers for the ALS (Assistant Lab Supervisor) or Head TA to students. Please do not send students to the ALS/Head TA office. Please do not ask the ALS or Head TA to come to the window for content or assignment related questions. Instead, if a student wishes to talk with a lab supervisor or Head TA, please send them back to their TA. The TA will give them guidance on how to proceed.

Modifying the Window Notes

Please note that students are not authorized to alter the window notes unless specifically asked to do so by a prep lab staff member. Unauthorized modifications can cause confusion. If something in the window notes doesn’t make sense, please ask about it.

Daily Sheet

After completing a task listed on the daily sheet, please cross out the line with your name on it. This lets everyone know it’s been completed. If you arrive late, please write your name and arrival time on the attendance area in the daily sheet. After completing cart moves, please initial on the mini daily sheet in your lab support window so that we know it’s been completed.

Best,
Tyler
