Dear Colleagues,
I am writing to follow up on our recent Town Hall meetings regarding the Stage 3 reopening that will commence on Monday. First, let me thank everyone for their participation. We had an extremely high turnout, including people who won't be participating until later stages but still wanted to help us identify best practices and make good decisions going forward. Echoing statements by Brian and Michael, I am extremely proud of how we, as a department, are handling this situation.
It is clear from those conversations that one of the central challenges that we are facing for Stage 3 is the sheer volume of communication regarding what needs to be done, new procedures for old activities, and updates to some of our band-aid fixes as we develop best practices. This fire hose of information is a direct and unavoidable consequence of the unprecedented nature of our current circumstances, and so Safety and Infrastructure, along with our outgoing and incoming Chairs, has been working hard to streamline this information flow as much as possible. To that end, we thought it would be a good idea to encourage everyone to review the three key documents that make up our reopening plan:
1. The overall reopening plan for the PRB: "Physics Research Building Stage 1-3 Reopening Plan"
2. The "baseline" plan for lab opening (i.e. the general stuff that applies to all labs): "Physics Dept - Stg 3 Lab Baseline Reopening Plan"
3. The specific reopening plan for your lab
It is important to understand that there is important information for everyone in the department in all three documents. I apologize for the underlined italics, but we very much want to make sure that as we reopen next week that we do so in a way that keeps all of us safe and healthy. I can say that a key thing that I have learned from my own experience with preparing my lab, and helping to prepare the department, for this "new normal" is that there are a lot (really, really many) of unintended/unanticipated consequences of social distancing. These plans represent many person-hours of thought trying map out these consequences, including feedback from Stages 1&2, so that we can minimize unpleasant surprises on Monday.
To make reviewing these documents easier for everyone, I am attaching the first two to this email and they have been posted to the department website homepage- look for the red button. For the third plan you should contact your PI/supervisor. Finally, as always, please reach out to S&I, your supervisor, or whoever you feel comfortable with if you have any questions.
Best wishes,
Zeke
