We have received a report of a phishing email that claimed to be from Michael Poirier. The email address was not his. The message asked the recipient to reply with their cell phone number.
I believe that Prof. Poirier is consistent about using his OSU email address for official communication.
Please be on the lookout for this sort of thing. Often it signals the beginning of an attempt to extract information to get into OSU computers, or at the very least to get your cell number to start spamming you. It has become pretty common for phishers to impersonate senior members of an organization, such as chairs and deans at a university.
If you receive such email, your best course of action is to use the "Report phish" button in your email client or, if there isn't one, forward the email to report-phish at osu.edu<mailto:report-phish at osu.edu>. If you aren't sure, please feel free to forward the email to action at physics.osu.edu<mailto:action at physics.osu.edu> and we will be happy to help you.
