  Dear all,

In case you missed it, there was a very important message sent yesterday from the CIO. It has implications for how you will access your OSU email and calendar. Please read the message below. You may want to consider downloading the Outlook Mobile app and try it out. I made it work on both my phone and iPad yesterday. Also, be aware that these limitations extend to desktops and laptop computers as well. You will need to use either the Outlook application (Mac and Windows) or go through the web browser interface in order to access your email and calendar.

Please keep in mind this is a mandate coming from the Office of the CIO. It is not a requirement imposed by ASC Tech. If assistance is required for the transition, ASC Tech personnel are available to help.

 -Brian

Valued Mobile App User,

To improve security, Ohio State will enable Microsoft’s “Modern Authentication” protocol in December. Modern authentication is a method of identity management that offers more secure user authentication and authorization. When we enable modern authentication, users cannot access university email via IMAP, POP, SMTP and ActiveSync protocols.

This means if you are currently using your device's built-in mail and calendar applications, you will no longer be able to use them to access university email and data once modern authentication is enabled in December. The university is starting to transition all users of mobile email clients to Outlook Mobile for iOS and Android.

There’s plenty of time to make this transition; as we are asking all mobile app users to transition to Outlook Mobile by December 1, 2019. In preparation for the move to modern authentication, we will disable new enrollments from other mobile apps that access Ohio State accounts on Friday, September 13.

Why Outlook Mobile?

We adopted Outlook Mobile as our mobile email solution because it integrates with our existing email system and other Microsoft Office 365 applications. It allows you to easily search and find files, contacts and emails. Functionality is very similar to Outlook you currently use, so there’s less of a learning curve when you begin using Outlook Mobile. It also provides security to protect the university’s institutional data.

What you need to run Outlook Mobile

To run Outlook Mobile on your mobile device there are a couple prerequisites.

  * Your device MUST have a device passcode set. You will not be able to use the application until the passcode is set. It also accepts biometric security such as facial recognition or fingerprints. You will need to use this security each time you log into the app.
  * On Android, you must install the Intune Company Portal app in addition to Outlook Mobile. This app provides the foundation needed to implement security for Office 365 mobile apps on Android devices.
