Hello Physics Faculty, Staff, and Researchers,

Winter has arrived in central Ohio and Regular staff are reminded to review their employee designation (provided in August and September 2015) in accordance with the Weather or Other Short-Term Closing Policy 6.15<http://hr.osu.edu/policy/policy615.pdf>. This designation may also be used for the purposes of the Disaster Preparedness and University State of Emergency Policy 6.17<http://hr.osu.edu/policy/policy617.pdf>.

All Term and Temporary staff are designated as Standby employees; see definitions below.

Essential employee

One who has been designated as critical to the operation of the unit, whose presence is required regardless of the existence of an emergency condition, university and/or building(s) closure, canceling of classes, and whose absence from duty could endanger the safety and well-being of the campus population and/or facilities. Employees may be designated as essential on a situational basis, e.g., in the event of a snow emergency only, or in the event of a public health crisis. Depending on the nature of their work, essential employees may be required to report to work on campus or may be able to work from home. Designations can be changed at any time depending on need.

Alternate employee

One who has been designated to serve as a back-up to an essential employee. Designations can be changed at any time depending on need.

Standby employee

Any employee not designated as essential or alternate. Designations can be changed at any time depending on need.

In the event of a closing look for class cancellation and office closure information, WOSU 89.7 FM Radio, www.wosu.org<http://www.wosu.org>, or enroll in the Buckeye Alert http://buckeyealert.osu.edu/.

Keep in mind if OSU remains open during hazardous weather conditions but local schools are closed, employees with dependents that require child care and need to stay at home should report time as vacation in eLeave and communicate with their supervisor per unit call-in procedures. Leave should be used appropriately per the Paid Leave Programs Policy 6.27<http://hr.osu.edu/policy/policy627.pdf>. If an employee does not accrue vacation make accommodations with your supervisor for an alternate arrangement and be sure to document this agreement i.e. document in an email which includes supervisor approval.

Please refer to the definitions above, review the policies, and contact ASC Physics HR<mailto:ASC-physics-hr at osu.edu> if you have any additional questions.

Thank you,
Mallory
