Title:                     "Hard X-ray Free Electron Lasers: the 'Optical Lasers of the 21st Century"

Abstract:               Optical lasers first demonstrated more than 50 years ago revolutionized how we look at matter on the length scales of the radiation and the time scales of the light pulses.  The breadth of science they have led to and continue to impact is unprecedented.  Will hard x-ray free electron lasers be the 'optical laser' of the 21stcentury?   In this talk we will review the principles of x-ray free electron lasers, where they are today and what we can expect in the near term.  This will be illustrated by recent scientific results and their potential to impact our understanding of matter on Ångström length scales and femtosecond time scales.
