IMPORTANT mobile devices must be encrypted

Hello everyone,

This is just a reminder to all regarding OSU-owned portable devices (laptops, tablets, external hard drives, even flash drives, literally anything than could contain restricted data).
Requirements:

1) Device must be certified as encrypted by the Physics Computer Facility

2) Device must have a Non-Cap Equipment Tag on it (flash drives do not require tags, but still must be encrypted)

3) Custodian of the device must sign an Agreement form prior to taking it off-campus

So if you have a device that has not been encrypted, please see the Physics Computer Facility.
And if you need a Non-Cap Equipment Tag or Off-Campus form, please see me, Steve Baker.

These steps are required for all existing devices, as well as new devices.
If a device that is not encrypted is lost or stolen, it causes the department great hardship. And unless we can prove that an unencrypted lost machine did not contain restricted data, it is a very serious issue. It will cost the department a lot of man hours and money.

So please take the time to do this if you haven't already done so.

I will send this message about once a month because we are constantly hiring new personnel and just as a general reminder.

Thank you,

Steve Baker
