USB Flash Drives Found

Hello,

Today one of my students found 3 flash drives sitting near 2 different printers.

Please be advised that it is dangerous to leave storage devices sitting unattended in common spaces, because it risks compromising your work or personal data.

Furthermore, if you ever find a flash drive, DO NOT attempt to use it. It can be tempting to check for evidence of the owner’s contact information, but don’t do it! Turn it in to a Lost & Found, or to an IT manager. There are stories about hackers leaving virus-infected flash drives outside classified research institutions and having a scary high success rate of infecting the computers of people who found them. Too many people don’t think enough about the security risks of connecting unknown drives to their computers.

If you think one of these drives is yours, please visit PRB1199, or reply to this email describing near which printer you left it, and the color, brand, or physical features of the drive.

Thanks,

Andrew
