A Message from the Chief Wellness Officer
Hi everyone,
What a busy month it has been! We launched our new two mile campus walking loop, the Buckeye Path to Wellness. It was so terrific to see many of you at the kick-off event on April 17th, as taking time to build physical activity into your day is so critical. Also, we had an outstanding Buckeye Wellness ROTC Bootcamp in the Shoe earlier this month. When our muscles are challenged at events like these, they grow and strengthen-and the same is true for our brains. We need to engage in activities to strengthen our intellectual wellness just as we need to strengthen our muscles.
Any time you learn a new skill or concept, attempt to understand a different viewpoint, or exercise your mind with puzzles and games, you're building intellectual well-being. There are so many ways you can improve your intellectual wellness. Here are a few strategies:
Read: Try reading news stories 20 minutes a day to stay informed about the world, or ask a friend to recommend a book you wouldn't ordinarily choose. Even reading for fun can exercise your ability to visualize and make new neural connections.
Learn: Visit your local library, university, museum for public lectures about subjects new to you. Try learning a foreign language, a musical instrument, or a new craft or skill.
Play: Sudoku and strategic games like chess and Scrabble exercise your mind and memory.
Practice Mindfulness: Focus your awareness on the present moment. Take slow deep breaths in and out and concentrate on the air moving in and out of your lungs. Acknowledge thoughts and let them go without assigning any positive or negative value to them. A few minutes of mindfulness practice a day allows your brain to relax, de-stress and recharge.

The Amazing Race to Wellness

Lincoln Tower Park (Turf Fields Outside of RPAC)
The Amazing Race to Wellness, presented by the Office of the Chief Wellness Officer and Buckeye Wellness, is a team competition based on the popular TV show. Teams of four Ohio State faculty, staff and spouses or partners can register for a time slot.
Teams will encounter challenges based on the Nine Dimensions of Wellness while engaging in light physical activity in Lincoln Tower Park. Fred Beekman Park
Interested in running a 5K but not sure how to train for it? Join Ohio State Health Coach Michael for a 9-week walking/running program.
Beginning May 3rd, the group will meet each week at Fred Beekman Park on Wednesdays at 5 p.m. to complete one session of the Couch to 5K program.
Classes are 20-30 minutes and run through June 28th. Spaces are limited. Workouts based on the Couch to 5K phone app, which is available for free download.

Interested in Joining The Ohio State University Heart Walk Team?
Ohio State is once again participating in the American Heart Association Heart Walk. This year the walk takes place on August 26 and begins at Columbus Commons. Participants can either walk one or three miles. All members of The Ohio State University team receive a free t-shirt to wear the day of the walk.
