Thanks, Dr. Kumar.  It would be great to review this at CIS so we are all on the same page regarding what we do in DSC. "pass zone" and" Do not reposition suture needles on needle holders after suturing (do not "guard" the needle) need clarification.  In the main OR they have foams for suture needles.  In DSC, we normally clip the needle back on the need holder before disposal and there is no foam.

While her email is aimed at educating incoming residents I would ask that this also be reviewed with the Faculty and staff as this is an expectation for all surgical team members.  While this is focused on the main OR, it should be followed for all surgery areas including the DSC and MCSC.  Please let me know if you have any questions or need any help in presenting it.

Hi All
I am reaching out with a request for assistance.  The OR is a really dangerous place to work when you consider the risk our staff has for sharps injuries that can transmit disease.  We have sharps injuries occur every month in our OR's.   The Perioperative Safety Committee has developed the attached document on NCH expectations for sharps exposure safety.  We would like our new staff to know about our expectations for sharps management at the sterile field. If these expectations were followed by all staff, we would decrease the number of sharps injuries occurring in our OR's.

Our ask, is for you to please include this document in your department orientation for rotating residents.  Our medical education department will put this in the MedHub curriculum for NCH employed fellows and non-rotating residents.  Again, our request is that you put this document in your orientation packet for the rotating residents coming through your service.
