Hi, Kimberly,

At W&L and two of the colleges at which I have worked post-retirement we tried to keep it simple.

We didn't use "good standing" preferring "eligible to continue at or return to" the institution. "GS" has so many definitions across institutions, the NCAA, and lenders that it doesn't give much information.

At W&L, students had one term on probation before being automatically suspended for a calendar year. Upon reinstatement, they were then still on probation for one more term, but we didn't call it "continued" probation, since the timing and enforcement weren't any different between your initial probation and your second chance.

Part of the rationale for "just" probation was it simplified both students to and faculty understanding if what was happening and enforcement.

And we preferred academic suspension which paralleled conduct probation in both the leaving process and the reinstatement process. Dismissal for us was a permanent separation, not temporary. There were only a few cases over the decades of academic dismissal as compared with conduct dismissal.
