   For Kent State, we treat transient course credits with the same policy as new incoming transfer transcripts. However, we require that students follow a specific advising procedure to get permission and document that they covered all catalog policies regarding taking non-Kent State courses before allowing that credit to be awarded.   1.  We do allow Core/Gened credits from transient work. Again, the student must work with their advisor to confirm first that the course is eligible for Kent Core or any other requirements in their program. We have found that some programs have very tight semester schedules and if a student has to drop a class mid semester that they might need to register for an equivalent course at another institution and transfer it back to try to stay on track for their graduation. (Thank goodness for the OT36 😊 )
  2.  Limits on major requirements vary by college. Thus the need for required advising. For example, some programs have their own program accreditation standards that they have to uphold and won’t allow a lower division course from a community college to count towards an upper division course in the major. While other programs are more flexible and allow upper division credit as long as the syllabus proves they covered the same content as our course (and passed at the minimum grade requirement for that major).
I hope that feedback helps! I know that extra advising appointments for situations like this can create extra burdens on advising staff, however we have found that having this information documented on an advising form helps alleviate misconceptions later on in the students program.

Good Morning Oacraoians!  I’m looking for what kind of policies you have for students to transfer in coursework (transient or cross-registration) After they become a matriculating student at your institution.

  1.  Do you allow transient work for CORE/General Education requirements after matriculation?
     *   If so, are there limitations, like a student can only do a basic requirement (like English or Math) and not other core areas like Literature, science, religious studies, etc…?
  2.  Do you allow transient work for Major requirements after matriculation?
     *   If so, are there limits by residency requirements in a major, limits on level that can be transferred (100 level versus 300 level)?
