Colleagues,
I have been asked to review our calendar to add in a fall break.
I am having trouble figuring how to meet instructional minutes for both full term and 7 week classes for a 14 week plus exam week. I understand how the calculations are done. My question is more specific as to if schools are meeting every minute of instructional time.
We have 4 credit courses. If we were to count exams in our instructional minutes 3000-120=2880/70 minutes, we would need 42 meetings. If I subtract out holidays and add exams we have a 14 week plus exams. However, 7 week two credit classes have the exam within the 7 weeks. So I could not subtract exam time and they would need to be 1500 each. I figure a 70 minute class would have to meet 22 times to make 1500 minutes which means that 7 week courses are short. Then if you subtract our holidays, it because more of a challenge. We would have about 20 meetings which does not fit in the 7 week sessions.
So my question is, am I taking this too literally? Can our overall calculation semester be fine and perhaps some sessions or one day a week classes come close? Looking at other school calendars, it seems that there may be some wiggle room?
Any thoughts would be helpful.
Thank you,
