WHO IS MİHRİ (KİM MİHRİ)

Best Documentary Film at the 59th Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival in Turkey

Virtual Q&A with the director Berna Gençalp and art historian and curator Dr. Özlem Gülin Dağoğlu follows screening

Tuesday November 18 4:30 pm · Wex Film/Video Theater

Discover the untold story of a Turkish woman and artist who broke down barriers in the early 20th century.

Who is Mihri traces the hidden life and travels of Mihri Rasim (Müşfik) Açba, one of the earliest female painters in Istanbul. Piecing together history via interviews and archival research, the film takes us on a journey from Istanbul in the late Ottoman Empire onward to Rome, Paris, and New York. Gorgeous animations paint a picture of Mihri’s rich contributions to art history, while contemporary female artists in Turkey are invited to interpret Mihri’s work and life. More than a straightforward biography of a single erased woman, Who is Mihri is an anthem for the countless women written out of art history. A virtual Q&A with director Berna Gençalp and art historian and curator Dr. Özlem Gülin Dağoğlu follows screening. In Turkish with English subtitles. (89 mins., DCP)
