Dear MES Forum,
The Middle East Studies Center has curated “Resources for How to Talk About the Violence in Israel and Gaza<https://mesc.osu.edu/news/resources-how-talk-about-violence-israel-and-gaza>” which gives quick background information on the conflict, what’s going on locally in Columbus to combat Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia, and plenty of starting points and trainings for how to have productive and inclusive conversations.
We hope the resources are helpful for everyone. We recognize, however, that faculty needs are different from the needs of the general public and pre-collegiate teachers. We’ve selected resources for university classrooms<https://mesc.osu.edu/news/resources-how-talk-about-violence-israel-and-gaza#UClassroom> that address three main issues:
1. Students bringing differing levels of knowledge to your class – for that, we included Background Information<https://mesc.osu.edu/news/resources-how-talk-about-violence-israel-and-gaza#Background> that includes introductory videos focusing on key facts they need to know. Thank you so much, to those of you who worked so hard this semester to create those!
1. Inflammatory statements coming up in the classroom when you’re not prepared – you’ll find resources on how to avoid that situation and what to do when it happens.
1. Lack of communication skills – you can point students toward videos and other resources we’ve provided that focus on foundational communication skills for university classrooms and beyond.
Please let me know if you find these useful, or if something might be missing from them. It's been challenging to stay focused on academics this past semester and it’s been stressful for many of us. Take a little time out for yourself during this week and final exams week!
Best wishes,
Melinda
