Journal of East Asian Popular Culture is calling for papers for a special
issue in “Post-socialist China, postcolonial Hong Kong and
post-martial-law Taiwan,” which will be published in August 2015. These
cinemas have been discussed profusely along stylistic, socio-economic,
political and cultural terms. But are the existing terms that film
scholars have used thus far adequate for the unique colonial conditions,
affectivities, post-colonial/postsocialist/post-martial-law experiences
and political violence of these respective cinemas and their audiences?
Are these cinema still confined within their regional identities and
cultural specificities at the age of inter-regional or even global
coproduction and distribution? How do individual films reconstruct
collective consciousness, restage public failure, and rehearse the
affective responses to certain socio-political impasses? We welcome
articles that employ different methodologies and perspectives, including
but not limited to theoretical, historiographical, industrial and
hermeneutical researches, to put into questions our existing discourses
and assumptions about contemporary cinemas in mainland China, Hong Kong
