China: Anti-Japan Violence Punished
By CHRIS BUCKLEY

A court in China convicted and sentenced a man to 10 years in prison for
battering the owner of a Japanese car with a motorcycle lock during
anti-Japanese protests that swept the country in September, official news
media said Friday. It was an assault that prompted debate about violent
undercurrents of popular nationalism in China. The attacker, Cai Yang, was
among 12 men sentenced by courts in Xi’an, a city that experienced violent
protests after a territorial dispute with Japan flared, Xinhua, the
state-run news agency reported. The dispute has brought an upwelling of
public anger that also draws on bitterness over the Japanese invasion and
occupation of China in the 20th century.
