FRENCH HOTEL BANS NOUVEAU RICHE CHINESE

Zadig & Voltaire is thumbing its nose at the nouveau riche from China
despite 900,000 Chinese visitors visiting France and spending around US$72
billion (HK$561.6 billion) on luxury goods last year.

The French fashion house will open a 40-room hotel in Paris in 2014, and
founder Thierry Gillier is explicit: "We are going to select guests. It
won't be open to Chinese tourists, for example."

He said there is a lot of demand in Paris for people looking for "quiet
with a certain privacy."

You can imagine the outrage this generated in the mainland, considering
that many countries bend over backwards to woo Chinese shoppers.

But many in the fashion industry said it all boils down to respect.

Some claim designer brands look down on Chinese consumers because they
just "tastelessly" grab any luxury product on offer.
