Subject: Emily Dickinson in Chinese (1)
***********************************************************

There are at least 4 or 5 worthwhile translations of Emily Dickinson's
poetry published in mainland China, and of varying quality and style. I
know that the translation by Jiang Feng 江枫 (1984) who is also an expert of
E.D. is probably the most widely circulated and acclaimed. This is the one
I remember having read when I was in grad school in China. The others
translation are by Pu Long 蒲隆 also a scholar of Dickinson, Wu Juntao 吴钧陶
/Wu Qiren 吴起仞,and Wang Jinhua 王晋华. BTW, Zhou Jianxin 周建新 of Henan
University in Kaifeng has written a review of these translations (郑州航空工
业管理学
院学报(社会科学版) <http://www.cnki.com.cn/Journal/H-H7-ZZHY-2004-01.htm>,
2004年01期
). According to Zhou, these later translations have rather limited
circulation, compared with the earliest Jiang translation. But the fact
that her poetry continues to be translated and published in these various
editions suggests to me that there might be a much larger audience out
there than the self-selected group of college English major, and poetry
fans.....

Good luck.
