Good afternoon,

I want to let you know that one of our faculty members who was on the campus prairie has been diagnosed with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, a bacterial infection transmitted by a tick. He has been many places in the last few weeks so it is unknown where he may have received the tick bite.

Although we do not have confirmation that the tick originated on our prairie, out of an abundance of caution we have temporarily closed the prairie and had an expert on campus today collecting the ticks for further research. This is expected to be an abundant year for ticks, as you may already have discovered in your own yard. Before the prairie is reopened, we will be posting a reminder sign at the entrance to the prairie warning that ticks are present. The Marion County Health Department has been informed about the faculty member’s diagnosis, and has confirmed we are taking appropriate steps. We will continue to keep them updated.

This link https://www.cdc.gov/rmsf/ will take you to the CDC website where more information on Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever can be found. Anyone experiencing the symptoms listed should consult with their health care provider.

Thanks,

Greg
