Science Café February Discusses Women in Ohio’s Prisons
Science Café is free and open to the campus community and the public
Brenda Chaney from the Department of Sociology at The Ohio State University will present Women in Ohio's Prisons at the next Science Café, Tuesday, February 5, 7 p.m., at the Infinity Restaurant in Downtown Marion’s historic Harding Hotel. How is the Ohio Reformatory for Women (ORW) meeting the needs of incarcerated women? Researchers in the 1960s and 1970s concluded that “pastel fascism” described the atmosphere of women’s institutions. Rather than encouraging independence, the goal was to make incarcerated women easy to control. The role of women in our society has changed since the 1960s and the societal problems that send women to prison have also changed. The challenge facing ORW is to identify those problems and to then provide programming that will give the women the opportunity to learn the skills needed to leave the prison as independent, contributing members of their communities. We will discuss the options for change available at ORW, including education, job training, alcohol and drug addiction treatment, mental health services, and community service programming.
