Hi Michael,

I saw your email below regarding your workshop on Alpha emitters.
I have been doing work on the skin doses from alpha contamination, using VARSKIN+ software.

I published this in 2024, using VARSKIN+V1.2.
1. Thomson, W. H. “Using VARSKIN+v1.2 to estimate dose from direct skin contamination with radionuclides 223Ra, 212Pb and 225Ac; considerations for Nuclear Medicine staff and associated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)”
Nuclear Medicine Communications. 45(3):159-168, March 2024.

However I had to use a correction factor for the skin density being 1 g/cc in VARSKIN.
VARSKIN have now changed that to be 1.1g/cc for alphas from v1.3 onwards, which makes the calculations a bit simpler.
But it is also extremely important to use the basal cell depth distribution , not a fixed depth , e.g. the regulatory 70um.

I could put this forward in an abstract to you if you thought it might be useful to your workshop?
I have now extended this work to include all the main alpha emitters planned , as you have listed.
Clearly I am UK based , but I see that your meeting is virtual.

Some background -
I am now semi-retired after about 50years nuclear medicine experience as a physicist, with 38 years as Head of Physics and Nuclear Medicine at City hospital in Birmingham UK.

I have a particular interest in skin dose techniques using VARSKIN. I have presented over 20 conference talks on this in the last few years , often by invite , and including several at the VARSKIN sessions of the RAMP (NRC) annual meeting. I have also given two bootcamp sessions on VARSKIN at the British Nuclear medicine Society. From those, I have also produced a WORD document with a step-by-step guide on using VARSKIN+ to calculate alpha skin doses which I would be happy to share. I have also established a VARSKIN UK mailbase, with nearly 200 registered physicists.

Kind regards

Bill Thomson

Hi all,

This is just another bump on the workshop that is coming up. I know many are interested, but we need more speakers! Even if you have ideas but aren't quite there on an abstract, we may be able to fit you in. If you have any questions, please let me know. Abstracts are due on Friday!

Anything MP or AU related would be appreciated (doesn’t have to be strictly HP)…we all want to hear from end users who have dealt with clinical trials, lessons learned, clinical background, etc.

Best,

Michael

The Health Physics Society is pleased to announce the upcoming virtual workshop, “Alpha-Emitters: from Production to Clinical Use”, sponsored by the Medical Health Physics Section, February 18-19, 2026.

This topical workshop is organized to provide a platform for all aspects of medical health physics related to alpha-emitter use, including radionuclide production methods, developmental chemistry, preclinical/translational research, clinical trials, operational health physics issues, and waste management. Radionuclides of special interest include Ac-225, At-211, Pb-212, Bi-213, Ra-223, as well as any promising novel alpha-emitters. Submitted abstracts will be organized into relevant topical sessions, along with several panel sessions incorporating experts in the field.
