All,

For those of you who are experimenting with BIBFRAME or are interested, please see below for discussion of bi-directionality of script in bib records. This would be a real problem for our community.

Subject: Internationalization of BIBFRAME: support for directionality of scripts?

Hi,

A question about the support for directionality of scripts, especially in bibliographic statements where there is a mixture of left-to-right (LTR) and right-to-left (RTL) scripts, has come up. My understanding is that Unicode formatting characters to override directionality within a statement will not be allowed. The BIBFRAME page at LC about non-Latin scripts (https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://guides.loc.gov/bibframe-manual/non-latin-scripts__;!!KGKeukY!1dD16USuLXx1jycZ4HeKfwOwX477Snn674Sq-I9zc42nEr-vkhU9bOjCAKFBSmPnksNeTYCqPcqBrSR8ddUp1bMeXeHy0fKBDGgHpeg$ <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https*3A*2F*2Fguides.loc.gov*2Fbibframe-manual*2Fnon-latin-scripts&data=05*7C01*7Ccharles.riley*40yale.edu*7C35394d1fa9554c52c2a008db1b452225*7Cdd8cbebb21394df8b4114e3e87abeb5c*7C0*7C0*7C638133755961861143*7CUnknown*7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0*3D*7C3000*7C*7C*7C&sdata=WkEQAvAG8X3PCJQ1Uz9AbHU3iA*2Bma4TJj3IjB7KZ5bY*3D&reserved=0__;JSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJQ!!KGKeukY!1dD16USuLXx1jycZ4HeKfwOwX477Snn674Sq-I9zc42nEr-vkhU9bOjCAKFBSmPnksNeTYCqPcqBrSR8ddUp1bMeXeHy0fKBze1ZDow$ >) does not address this issue. One possible means of improving support in these use cases might be through RDF 1.2, but that's still in the process of being developed. An example of the kind of record I'm thinking of is here: https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.worldcat.org/title/1158882278__;!!KGKeukY!1dD16USuLXx1jycZ4HeKfwOwX477Snn674Sq-I9zc42nEr-vkhU9bOjCAKFBSmPnksNeTYCqPcqBrSR8ddUp1bMeXeHy0fKBYNaKEVk$
