[Heb-NACO] Bible. Haftaroth

You do realize that AJL can draw up its own list (as AALL has done), with its own $2 indicator.

A “Haftorah” is NOT a title, and it is what the work “is” rather than what it is about, and therefore it is a “form”.

Hi Aaron, Elhanan, and Rita,
I don't know if you have seen the draft of the proposed "Religion/Genre form terms". This document was prepared by LC with the help of ATLA, AJL, Catholic Library Associatioj, the Council on East Asian Libraries and others. The latest draft that I can find on the web is from 2012. In the introduction it says that "An overriding rule for this project was to aim for broad terms." Haftarot is not included in this draft, most likely due to the fact that it is not broad and usable across many religions.
I think that Rita's approach is the best for North American cataloging and hopefully we will see some contributions by NACO Hebraica catalogers to the LCNAF for separate Haftarot.
Thanks, Heidi

Can’t the fact that the work “is” a haftarah be brought out through a 655 heading?

Hi, Elhanan,

How are you? Separate haftarot appear to be entered under the specific book of the Bible and the verses which make up the individual haftarah. Here’s an example, OCLC #48745122:

1300 Bible. ǂp Isaiah X, 32-XII, 6. ǂl Hebrew. ǂf 1898.
24510 Hafṭarah le-yom shemini shel Pesaḥ : ǂb ʻim ha-tafsir bi-leshon Parsi : ke-fi mah she-nahagu bene ʻami yoshve Bukhara ṿa-agapeha ... / ǂc ṿe-anokhi taḳanti ... Raḥamim ben Eliyahu Sofer.
260 ירושלם : ǂb א.מ. לונץ, ǂc 659 [1898 or 1899].
260 Yerushala[y]im : ǂb A.M. Lunts, ǂc 659 [1898 or 1899]
300 32 pages ; ǂc 20 cm
336 text ǂb txt ǂ2 rdacontent
337 unmediated ǂb n ǂ2 rdamedia
338 volume ǂb nc ǂ2 rdacarrier
500 Hebrew and Judeo-Persian.
7001 סופר, רחמים בן אליהו.
7001 Sofer, Raḥamim ben Eliyahu.
73002 Bible. ǂp Isaiah X, 32-XII, 6. ǂl Judeo-Persian. ǂf 1898.

Shalom all

Bible. Haftaroth is a valid heading but there are no examples of specific haftarot or groups of haftarot

Printed volumes of haftarot usually (always?) contain haftarot for the entire year, but the NLI catalog has many cases of manuscripts of single haftarot or groups, for example:
Haftarot of vayikra-devarim
Haftarot of beha'alotekha-korah
Haftarah of yom kippur
Haftarah of Haazinu
Etc.

How do you think these should be entered?

Best wishes

Elhanan
