Dear Elhanan,
The way I understand the constructions according to the LC Subject Cataloging Manual (SHM) and Library of Congress Subject Headings is that
1. " Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)" can be subdivided by any geographic subdivision according to the rules outlined in SHM 830.
2. The first and second examples are constructed incorrectly. If we look at LCSH "Public opinion" as a topical subdivision can then be further subdivided geographically so these should be constructed
Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)--Public opinion--Austria.
Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)--Public opinion--Europe.
3. The third, fourth and fifth subject headings are fine as demonstrated in LCSH
4 ....... among your other examples
Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)--Germany--Public opinion - This should be reconstructed as Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)--Public opinion--Germany
Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)--Public opinion, German - This is not a valid subdivison. SHM Instruction sheet 1955
Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)--Foreign public opinion, German - OK
and
Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)--Germany--Public opinion should be Holocuast, Jewish (1939-1945)--Public opinion--Germany
Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)--Public opinion, German - Not valid
The subject heading "Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)--Influence cannot be subdivided geographically according to LCSH
So to bring out regional aspects, this heading could be combined with Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)--Public opinion--[Geographic subdivison]
I am not sure that I have answered all, or even any of your questions, or if I am correct in some or all of my responses. I look forward to hearing the responses of our other colleagues who use LCSH.
Best, Heidi

Subject: [Heb-NACO] Holocaust subjects
Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) subdivides geographically. Is this limited to countries in which the Holocaust occurred, or to other aspects of the Holocaust (Influence, Public opinion) in other countries?
LC authority file (authorities.loc.gov) has headings such as:
Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)--Austria--Public opinion
Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)--Europe--Public opinion
Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)--Foreign public opinion, Afghani
Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)--Foreign public opinion, American [British, etc.]
but also
Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)--Foreign public opinion, German
and
Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)--Germany--Public opinion
as well as:
Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)--Public opinion, German
also
Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)--Israel--Public opinion.
Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)--Palestine--Public opinion.
etc.
and
Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)--United States--Public opinion
are these old/incorrect forms? What is the correct format for influence (=aftermath) of the Holocaust in non-Holocaust countries, and for public opinion in both Holocaust and non-Holocaust countries?
